Solving hard problems: the quantum optimization challenge

Quantum computers are often touted as the solution to all our problems, especially those that involve questions of “optimization”. Whether it’s creating better supply-chain networks or finessing the production of fertilizers, even tiny improvements made by quantum computers could lead to big savings of money and time. Pradeep Niroula introduces the burgeoning research field of “quantum-enhanced optimization”. Elsewhere this month, astronomer Sophia Sheikh explains what drives her search for alien life, while one anonymous physicist describes the difficulties he’s faced with his mental health.
